reflection

I feel that while my students are not “dumb” or “stupid” they are not being prepared to function on a high level in 2009 society. I’m not quite sure where this inability comes from. Is it because standards have been lowered to a point at which completing the bare minimum is an achievement that needs to be rewarded with feel good awards like “Students Who Shine” or even a passing grade in my class because, hey, you might be struggling in life, I’m not going to hold you accountable for anything! Here’s an A!?

  1. I agree. To give a student every opportunity to pass a course is a teacher's obligation. I just don't see many students fulfilling their responsibilities. I had a student tell me the other day she did not see the point of coming every day because when she did she ended up with the same grades as some of her classmates who did not attend daily. I replied that the more she comes to class the better she would do on the regents. I had students tell me first and/or second marking periods do not count only third marking period counts. Giving students passing marks for zero effort and productivity sends the wrong message and in the end does more harm than good. Will our students be prepared for the real world?
